The story centers around Masaki Tenchi, a high school student in Okayama Prefecture.
Through a chance encounter, Tenchi gets caught up in the chaos of extraterrestrials who have come to Earth for various reasons.
It is a science fiction anime that combines harem, slapstick, and space opera elements.

The setting of the work varies, including Earth and outer space.
In the galaxy of "Tenchi Muyo!", due to the influence of prehistoric civilizations, there are humans (and other races) capable of interbreeding on many planets, including Earth, and several interstellar nations have been formed. Earth is one of those interstellar nations.
It is nominally a special protected area under the direct control of "Jurai," but most Earthlings, including the governments of various countries, are unaware of this...

・The Taoro Shrine in Okayama Prefecture, which is the setting of this work, and the places of origin for the character names, have become pilgrimage sites for fans of the work, and are known as one of the earliest examples of the pilgrimage phenomenon caused by a TV anime, along with "Sailor Moon."
